Art Center College of Design South Campus Dedication

Remarks of Mayor Bill Bogaard
May 16, 2004

I am honored to be here today among so many people who clearly care very deeply about the City and the people of Pasadena.

A few minutes ago, Bud Knapp mentioned the City’s willingness to embrace Art Center’s vision for a facility that brings art and education to the community; for greater access to programs that promote critical thinking and problem solving; for a Campus that strengthens and promotes the very goals we have for Pasadena as a City of Learning.

My question is, how could we not embrace that vision?

It should come as no surprise that our 2003 City of Learning initiative sprang originally from the halls of Art Center. And it comes as no surprise that Art Center is leading the way in fulfilling the aims of that initiative—to foster a community-wide climate for learning at all ages, based upon the unique resources of the City.

We are here to officially dedicate this facility today. But with the inaugural Art Center Design Conference already on its résumé, with a regionally significant eight-school M.F.A. show set to open in just a few weeks, and as host of Community Forums like the one held here last month to help children develop nonviolent conflict-resolution skills, the South Campus is already a resource hard at work—enriching the students of Art Center, the world of design, and the City and citizens of Pasadena.

And so, as I look forward to continue working with Richard Koshalek, Judy Webb, and all the thoughtful and visionary people at Art Center to make Pasadena an even better place to live, work, play, and learn.

At this time, to mark this official event, it is my distinct honor, as Mayor, to issue the following proclamation:

WHEREAS, Art Center has been an important presence in the City of Pasadena for nearly 30 years; and

WHEREAS, as one of the world’s preeminent art and design institutions, Art Center contributes to Pasadena’s cultural life by creating special events, exhibits and collaborations with other cultural and educational institutions throughout the City; and

WHEREAS, through the creation of the new South Campus, Art Center is expanding its outreach to the community by providing educational opportunities to students of all ages, from young children to lifelong learners; and

WHEREAS, the repurposing of the former wind tunnel and power plant at the South Campus demonstrates Art Center’s incredible daring and vision, which are both integral qualities of the institution;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bill Bogaard, Mayor of the City of Pasadena, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim May 16, 2004 as Art center college of design day in the City of Pasadena, and urge members of the community toexperience this great resource and the educational opportunities it offers.

I am delighted to present this proclamation to Art Center on the occasion of the formal opening of the 950 South Raymond building.
