Free Cultural Competency Workshops Offered

PASADENA, Calif.—The public is invited to attend a free, three-part workshop-discussion series on “Cultural Competency” sponsored by the Pasadena Human Relations Commission.  All workshops will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays—May 25, June 22 and July 20—in the Pasadena City Council Chamber at City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave., Second Floor.

 The following sessions are planned:

  • Workshop 1, May 25, “Access Denied: Technology Bias”

How important is the internet in the United States today?  Does the inability to access the internet limit individuals’ ability to grow?  How does this affect Pasadena?

  • Workshop 2, June 22, “Who am I?  Breaking Through Prejudice by Understanding Ourselves”

Why do we judge others?  Why are we uncomfortable around certain groups of people?

  • Workshop 3, July 20, “Reintegration:  Problems Faced by Ex-cons Trying to Find Housing After Released From Prison”

If you can’t go home where do you go?  Why is so difficult for ex-cons to find housing?  How does this affect a community?

The series is held in conjunction with Banks Consultants.  For more information about the series or the Pasadena Human Relations Commission, contact Sonya Amos, staff liaison, (626) 744-4234 or samos@cityofpasadena.net. For more information about the City of Pasadena, go online to www.cityofpasadena.net.
