4          ROBO TOY FEST BRICK BOUTIQUE 

The Robo Toy Fest Brick Boutique is a robot and building block convention for children and adults. The kids’ play area, sponsored by Mega Bloks, includes activities and the famous “you build it, you keep it” section. Many toy vendors and dealers will be on hand. Among those featured at the show will be Johnny Yong Bosch (Adam Park from Power Rangers and Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach); comic book artist Tone Rodriguez; Dan Goodsell (a.k.a. Mr. Toast); and artist Tsuyoshi Nonaka (designer for Bandai Power Rangers toys).

5-9: JPL HOSTS SPACEOPS CONFERENCE  

JPL Director Charles Elachi and other JPLers are among those speaking at the SpaceOps 2014 13th International Conference on Space Operations, to be held at the Pasadena Convention Center. The conference is hosted by JPL and organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It will bring together the space operations community to address state-of-the-art operations principles, methods and tools.  6          CAMERATA PACIFICA 

Camerata Pacifica is a chamber music ensemble comprised of the finest performers of chamber music from around the world. The ensemble is distinctive for artistic excellence, an innovative approach to classical music and a repertoire that ranges from baroque to brand new compositions, from familiar masterworks to those that have yet to become favorites. This performance features Messiaen’s “Appel Interstellaire from Des canyons aux étoiles,” Heggie’s “Winter Roses” (commissioned by Richard and Luci Janssen, premiered 2004), Schumann’s “Adagio & Allegro in A-Flat Major, Op. 70,” and Rheinberger’s “Nonet.”

 8          SPACEFEST VI – CAROLYN PORCO 

This year’s Spacefest will feature a special Thursday evening ticketed event at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The show will begin with the wildly popular Apollo astronauts panel, whose anecdotes are insightful and often hilarious. Author Andrew Chaikin and Dr. Carolyn Porco will moderate. Afterward, Porco will present the latest discoveries and stunning images from Saturn, including her Earth-imaging event, “The Day The Earth Smiled,” and will finish with her views on the greatest legacy of more than 50 years of planetary exploration. The astronaut panel includes Al Worden, Fred Haise, Jim McDivitt, Richard Gordon, Edgar Mitchell, Walt Cunningham, Alan Bean and Rick Armstrong (son of Neil Armstrong). 

6 p.m., $39 in advance, $45 day of event

8-11     SPACEFEST VI 

Spacefest is the premier event for professional or amateur space enthusiasts interested in astronomy, manned space exploration, robotic exploration, commercial space or space history. The event features appearances by most living Apollo astronauts, along with noted astronomers, artists and authors. Expert speakers will cover all facets of planetary science, physics, extraterrestrial biology, and science surrounding spacecraft missions. Authors will discuss and sign their latest books, while vendors will offer items ranging from rare meteorites to model spacecraft. The lineup of astronauts and other prominent figures includes Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin (Saturday only), Gene Cernan, Alan Bean, Dave Scott, Edgar Mitchell, James McDivitt, Walt Cunningham, Richard Gordon, Jack Lousma, Fred Haise, Rusty Schweickart, Vance Brand, Bruce McCandless, Jerry Ross, Thomas Jones, Eileen Collins, Robert Cardenas, Gerry Griffin, Jerry Bostick, Sy Liebergot, Dee O’Hara and Richard Hatch. The Planetary Society, Pasadena will be on hand to talk about current projects and advocacy efforts, offer memberships. Planetary Radio will record many live segments from the event.

9-11     ARTISAN JEWELRY SHOW 2014 

The Artisan Jewelry Show 2014 will feature artisans presenting original forged, cast, carved, hammered, soldered, beaded, fabricated, gold, silver, semi-precious and precious jewelry. Each artisan will be on hand to meet with the public and discuss his or her work. All work is available for purchase. Held over Mother’s Day weekend, the event is perfect for purchasing that one-of-a-kind piece of art jewelry for your mother, yourself or another loved one. There is something for every taste and budget, from simple gifts to the keepsake of a lifetime.

12        ANTHONY BOURDAIN AND ERIC RIPERT, PRESENTED BY THE DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES 

Join Anthony Bourdain and his good friend Eric Ripert as they share stories and muse on the place of food in our personal communities and global experience, providing frank and provocative insight into what really goes on behind kitchen doors. Bourdain, an Emmy Award-winning TV host and bestselling author, is an outspoken commentator who provides unique insights into food and cultures around the world. He is the host of two new TV shows, “The Taste,” a cooking competition series for ABC, and “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” for CNN. Ripert is the chef and co-owner of New York’s famed Le Bernardin, which continues to receive universal acclaim, including three stars from the Michelin Guide, and an unprecedented “29” food rating from the Zagat Guide. Like Bourdain, Ripert also has served as a guest judge and “fan favorite” on Bravo’s “Top Chef” for several seasons. He is the author of four cookbooks, including “Avec Eric” (based on his popular PBS program), “On the Line,” “A Return to Cooking” and the “Le Bernardin Cookbook.” 

The event is part of the 2013-2014 Distinguished Speaker Series of Southern California.

 24        WAKIN CHAU CONCERT 

Wakin Chau is a Hong Kong-born Taiwanese singer and actor whose popularity has spread throughout Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China and parts of Southeast Asia. He was known as Emil Chau through the 1980s and 1990s, and by 2000 he reverted to his given name of Wakin. He has appeared in numerous films and has made many guest appearances and television and radio shows in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan. Along with his singing career, he is a restaurateur and is active in international charitable causes, including kidney dialysis charities in Singapore and the January 2002 “Take a Deep Breath” concert in Taipei to raise money for local healthcare organizations. He also participated in Beijing’s Fourth Grand Charity Drive for Children in 2005 and Jackie Chan’s all-star concerts in Las Vegas.
