Robinson Family Commemorative Events July 18-24, 2014

ROBINSON FAMILY COMMEMORATION EVENTS JULY 18-20, 2014 OPEN TO PUBLIC 

PASADENA, Calif.—The public is invited to three “Robinson Family Weekend” events Friday, July 18, 2014, through Sunday, July 20, 2014, celebrating Olympic medalist and track star athlete Matthew “Mack” Robinson and Rachel Robinson, civil rights activist and wife of Baseball Hall of Fame legend Jackie Robinson. 

Two events commemorating the centennial birthday of Olympic Silver Medalist and former Pasadena resident Mack Robinson will be held Friday, July 18.  The third event is to induct Rachel Robinson, wife of Jackie Robinson, into the Baseball Reliquary’s Shrine of Eternals on July 20  

The City of Pasadena and the Mack Robinson family host a celebration 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 18 at the Robinson Memorial, City Hall Centennial Square, 100 N. Garfield Ave.  

The event features special presentations by the Robinson Family, including family reflections and a musical selection, as well as a Mack Robinson photo and memorabilia display.  After the formal event, the public will have the opportunity to share their personal experiences of Mack Robinson with the Robinson Family and pose for pictures.  

Road closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Garfield Avenue, between Union and Ramona streets and on Holly Street, between Garfield and Marengo avenues.  The public is encouraged to arrive early to find parking. (More event info below after postcards.)

Later that evening, Pasadena City College (PCC) and the Mack Robinson family will hold a reception 5-7 p.m. July 18 at PCC’s Creveling Lounge, 1570 E. Colorado Blvd, to honor the former PCC star athlete; watch a video of Mack Robinson’s 1936 historic Berlin Olympic performance and view Mack Robinson memorabilia.

The Robinson Family Weekend concludes on Sunday, July 20, when the Baseball Reliquary will induct Rachel Robinson, Jackie Robinson’s wife, into the Shrine of Eternals during a special ceremony at the Pasadena Central Library, Donald Wright Auditorium, 285 E. Walnut St.  Delano Robinson, Rachel’s sister-in-law & wife of Mack Robinson, will accept the induction on Rachel’s behalf.  Other inductees are baseball pitcher and broadcaster are Dizzy Dean and baseball infielder and coach Don Zimmer.
