Council District 1

  • District 1: Vice Mayor Jacque Robinson

Jacque RobinsonElected to serve a four year term in May 2007, Jacque Robinson became one the youngest elected  officials in the history of the City of Pasadena at age 28. Born and raised in Pasadena, Jacque is a product of the district she now represents. She has devoted her first term in office to issues of youth and young adult development, public safety, and economic development for the benefit of residents in her district. She is most proud of her collaborative work spearheading the Pasadena-Altadena 20/20 Initiative (a grassroots coalition of individuals and organizations working to stop gang and community violence by focusing on the highest risk, highest need, gang-impacted youth, young adults and their families), securing funding and completion for the first Lincoln Avenue Specific Plan, and providing yearly emergency preparedness training for her constituents.

Raised by parents who work as a cement mason and postal clerk, Jacque has spent the majority of her professional life fighting for working families as a labor community organizer. She has worked on community, issue-based and electoral campaigns with the California Teachers Association, Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union, California Federation of Teachers, and the Los Angeles Urban League. She is a contributing member of the Public Safety, Legislative Policy, and Economic Development & Technology City Council Committees and serves as city representative to the Foothill Workforce Investment Policy Board and the Gamble House. In 2009, Jacque was selected by her Council colleagues to serve as Chair of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Youth, Families, and Neighborhoods and sits on the Transportation, Communications & Public Works Policy Committee of the California League of Cities.

Jacque is a 2006 graduate of Former Senator Barack Obama's Hopefund - Yes We Can Training Program and a 2005 graduate of the Los Angeles African American Women's Public Policy Institute. Jacque maintains her commitment to public service and social justice as an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Pasadena Alumnae Chapter and the Pasadena Branch NAACP. A proud public school graduate, Jacque is an alumna of John Muir High School (1996) and earned her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley (2000). She expects her M.A. in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge in December 2010.

Jacque credits the Pasadena Chapter of the National Women’s Political Caucus for sparking her interest in running for public office and the Los Angeles African American Public Policy Institute for preparing her path. Since the demands of being in public elected office are many and her free time is limited, she enjoys the opportunity to just remain at home, travel, and play with her dog, Sam. Jacque does her best to approach life by the reference, “Don’t talk about it. Be about it” and is honored to serve the community that raised her to be the leader she is today.

How is the Vice Mayor elected?

At the organizational meeting on the first Monday in May, the City Council elects from its members a Vice Mayor. The Vice Mayor is traditionally selected for two one-year terms. During the Mayor's absence or disability, the Vice Mayor exercises the powers and performs the duties of the Mayor. If for any reason the Mayor fails to serve his or her full term of office, the Vice Mayor shall assume the duties of the Mayor for the unexpired term.
