Council District 4

  • District 4: Councilmember Steve Haderlein

Steve HaderleinSteve was first elected to the City Council in 1999 because of his commitment to public safety, work with our public schools, effective financial management, thoughtful economic development and support for our parks. Since that time, his actions have remained true to those issues. For example, under Steve’s leadership, Pasadena's first park since the 1970s was created in 2005. In addition, fields have been renovated, playground equipment replaced and improved, cement walking paths installed and maintenance enhanced. “The creation of a new park and improvements within the park system are among my most satisfying accomplishments” according to Steve.

During Steve’s tenure on the Council, the relationship between the Pasadena Unified School District and the City of Pasadena has improved greatly (see http://pasadenacsp.org/pcsp). This has resulted in joint use agreements that benefit both organizations but the real winners are students and residents of Pasadena. This relationship has created new playgrounds at Madison Elementary, a safe drop-off area at Pasadena High School, new open space at San Rafael, better security at all our school and more. In addition, Steve served on the Charter Reform Task for that implemented many positive changes within the Pasadena Unified School District.

In the area of financial management, the City bond rating has improved to AAA and remains at an all time high. Steve serves on the Finance Committee as well as Chairman of the Public Safety Committee. He consistently champions the concerns of neighborhoods. In his service since 1999, Steve has never voted for a developer’s request to amend the East Pasadena Specific Plan or the East Colorado Boulevard Specific Plan…the two documents the guide development in the area that he represents.

Two additional areas of focus for Steve are mobility and libraries. “I am very proud of the improvements in mobility and our library system.”

Steve has also served as Vice Mayor.

Steve grew up in the area the youngest of six children and attended Loyola Marymount University (BBA) on a basketball scholarship. There he earned the Male Student-Athlete of the Year award. Before continuing his education at the University of Southern California (MBA), Steve played one year in the professional basketball league of Australia. He is currently an Economics teacher at La Salle College Prep High School. Prior experience includes ten years as business lender with three major banks and two years as a stay at home dad.

Steve and his wife Jane have two wonderful children, Kathryn and Jenny. Jane serves as an Executive at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
