OverDrive FAQ's
Why do I need to be on the waiting list for a digital book? I thought digital books are for people to download at any time.
Our digital collections function just as our hardbound real-world collections does, whereby we can only lend out one copy of a book, in this case an eBook, to one customer at a time.
What happens when the book is due?
The title automatically expires and is returned to the library when it is due. There is no need for you to manually return the title.
I was told to activate the Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) and my eReader with the same Adobe ID. What’s the Adobe ID? How can I get one and how do I activate the ADE and my eReader with it?
An Adobe ID is a free and a nonintrusive way of identifying users — you need only provide a name, country, and e-mail address. You can create your Adobe ID when prompted within Digital Editions as you authorize your computer, or go directly to the Adobe.com membership site:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/
How can I find out which titles you added recently?
You can visit “My Digital Account” found in the top-hand navigation menu within our digital library (
http://pas-gdl.lib.overdrive.com
). If already logged in or after logging in, you can then click on “My Digital Bookshelf” to see your titles.
Is your digital library compatible with Kindle?
Yes. We have titles that are Kindle compatible. You can perform an “Advanced Search” to look for Kindle compatible titles
Is your digital library compatible with iPad?
Yes. You can install and use both OverDrive and Kindle applications on the iPad.
What’s the difference between WMA and MP3 audiobook? Which one should I choose?
WMA and MP3 are digital file formats used for audio files, including music and audiobooks. Visit the Device Resource Center (
http://www.overdrive.com/Resources/DRC/
) to see which file format is compatible with your device.
An OverDrive WMA Audiobook title is a digitally-protected audiobook that has been optimized for download. OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles are built using the Microsoft® Windows Media® Audio format, which greatly enhances the sound quality for desktop listening, play of CD copies (where permitted by the publisher), and portable device use.
OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks are audiobooks that you can check out at this site. Download and listen to OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks on Android, BlackBerry, iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, Mac, Windows, and Windows Mobile using OverDrive Media Console. On Windows and Mac, you can transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to supported devices and burn them to CD.
What is ePub?
ePub is a digital file format typically used for eBooks. Adobe EPUB eBooks are digital versions of print books that you can check out at this site. Download and read Adobe EPUB eBooks on your Windows® or Mac® computer using Adobe Digital Editions and on supported Android, Apple, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 7 devices using OverDrive Media Console v2 (or newer). Adobe EPUB eBooks can also be transferred from Windows and Mac to many eBook reading devices.
Adobe PDF eBooks are eBooks that you can check out as well. Download and read Adobe PDF eBooks on your Windows or Mac computer using Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe PDF eBooks can be transferred to supported eBook reading devices.
Why couldn’t I find some popular titles in your catalog, such as Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom?
Not all publishers are making their titles available via eBook. Regardless, we are constantly evaluating our collection and we try to add any popular titles that might be missing.
Borrowing Policies
How many titles can I have checked out at the same time?
You can have up to 5 titles checked out at any given time.
How many days do I get to keep titles I check out?
21 days is the default lending period. You may select 7 days if you prefer less time.
Can I return items?
Adobe® eBooks can be returned using Adobe Digital Editions.
EPUB ebooks can be returned using OverDrive Media Console v2.3 (or newer) for Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone/iPad.
Kindle eBooks can be returned using your Amazon Kindle account.
Can I renew the items I have checked out?
Titles cannot be renewed, but you can check them out again if they are available when the checkout period ends.
How many items can I place on hold at the same time?
You can place up to 10 titles on hold at a time.
When a hold becomes available for check out, how long do I have to check out the title before the hold expires?
When the title is available for you, we will email you instructions on checking the item out. The item will be held for you for 3 days after we email you notice that the title is available.
