At a Glance:
Here at PWP, we care about keeping up our neighborhoods’ aesthetics. Beautification and reliability have been at the forefront of a multi-year Capital Improvement Program which began with the Underground Utility program in 1968. Under this initiative, the city works to underground overhead electric systems including cable and telephone communication lines, on collector and arterial roads such as Hill Ave. The undergrounding process improves aesthetic quality of an area by removing unsightly utility poles and overhead wires.
The undergrounding program is funded by an underground surtax which is collected as part of the City’s Municipal Services bill. The tax is 2% of the first $1,000 on a monthly bill, 1.5% on the next $4,000, 1% on the next $20,000 and .5% on all charges above $25,000. The underground surtax for an average utility customer is $4.97 on a bimonthly basis or $29.82 annually.
This project includes the undergrounding of the electrical system on Hill Ave. from Villa St. to Topeka St. (North City Limit). JM Communications, Inc. was awarded the contract by City Council on August 12, 2013.
